So I saw this article on Channel NewsAsia yesterday – Choosing English as working language ensured S’pore’s survival: Lee Kuan Yew. Just two years ago, Insistence on bilingualism in early years of education policy was wrong: MM Lee.
Somehow I keep linking the phrase “Jack of all trades, Master of none” to this whole concept of “Multilingualism”. Let’s ignore the overachieving linguists for now. I personally have found it hard to maintain good speaking/writing skills in both English and Mandarin, and it has reached a point where Ivan laughs at my slang-ed Mandarin each time I order food lol. Not that I can’t speak it, I just sound funny with my English slang mixed into Chinese words. Lol.
Anyhow, reading and writing Mandarin isn’t enough anymore. Life has to make it harder by throwing “Business Mandarin” in our faces. Imagine my horror the last time I had to read an annual report in Mandarin. Hahaha. Thank God for Google Translate!
